The generation of "it depends"

It is perfectly useless to ask a post-modern person in what he or she believes. It depends...

In a section of the website of the Waldensian church there is a section where various pastors and teachers answer questions that visitors ask them. The section carries the title "a church that answers", an undoubtedly fascinating title. They may, certainly "answer", but today it is truly naive to believe that a church like that, imbued with the post-modernism that characterizes contemporary culture, can say what exactly it believes in. You can ask them, for example, "Are you Calvinists?", To which the best answer they could give is: "it depends". For postmodernists, in fact, words have a completely subjective and circumstantial meaning and no longer correspond to any objective reality. They "are" if they "feel" that they are or consider it convenient from time to time ... They live (and boast about it) of the "critical approach" which also characterizes the conception that they have of the Bible itself; and yet their confessions of faith (which once defined their identity) is fluid and "interpretable", like everything. For them, positions on ethics are also circumstantial, relative, as fluid as a person's gender, which they believe according to the gender ideology they support. It depends...

This applies not only to "the Waldensians" but also to most contemporary evangelicals. In an Evangelical church of which I thought I would become a member, I once had to insist that they show me their confession of faith. Whereupon the pastor, or someone in that position, after looking, embarrassed, at the bottom of a drawer, handed it to me, telling me, however, that, after all, it did not matter much, that "it would not matter" what I believed on the theological level (as long as I had not "created problems"). Today the majority "go" to a church "if they feel good", they are at ease, if the pastor or people "are nice", if there is good music, if the refreshment after the worship is good, and not for what it believes ...

Yes, it is perfectly useless to ask a post-modern person in what he or she believes. It depends on how they wake up in the morning, on how the winds of culture blows. Saying a "church that answers" is the same as saying "a church in search". It is not clear what they are in search of, though, but they are looking for it .. It is better to ask them if after the worship they entertain the faithful with a good coffee ...
