== When the knife stops ==

The story of the sacrifice of Isaac (Genesis 22:1-14) is one of the best-known and, at the same time, most problematic texts in the Bible. How could God ask Abraham to sacrifice his own son? What meaning can an episode that seems to belong to a distant and incomprehensible world have today? This reflection frankly addresses the difficulties the text raises in modern sensibilities, showing how the theme of sacrifice has not disappeared from contemporary culture, but has simply changed form. Through Abraham's trial, the central message of biblical faith emerges: the God who provides. It is an anticipation of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. On Mount Moriah, the knife stops; on Golgotha, God provides the definitive and unrepeatable sacrifice of reconciliation.

=== Sacrifices ===
The biblical text brought to our attention today is one of the most famous, but also one that could be considered among the most controversial in all of Scripture. It is the story of Abraham's test of faith: God asks him to offer Isaac, the son of promise, the long-awaited son in whom his entire future seemed to lie, as a sacrifice on an altar.

For those unfamiliar with biblical characters, I'll remind you of Abraham. The Bible presents him as the "father of believers," the model of what a true believer should be, the one God calls to be His faithful witness in the world. Abraham was certainly not a perfect man, but someone who had learned to trust in God even when he didn't fully understand what He was calling him to. God had promised him numerous descendants and a blessing destined to reach all the nations of the earth. Isaac would be the son born when all human hope seemed extinguished. For this reason, he was not just a beloved son: for Abraham, he represented the future, hope, and the fulfillment of God's promises. Yet at a certain point, God asked Abraham to sacrifice him. What could such an "absurd" request possibly mean?

I don't think it's necessary to hide the fact that this episode causes discomfort in many people. In fact, it also causes discomfort in many believers. We live in a culture that rightly considers human sacrifice aberrant and barbaric. The very idea that a human life could be offered to gain the favor of the divine seems alien and repugnant to us. Therefore, an honest preacher should not pretend that the difficulties in this text don't exist. They do exist. And they are real difficulties.

There is, however, a question we should perhaps ask ourselves before judging the ancient world too harshly: are we really so far removed from the logic of sacrifice? At first glance, it would seem so. Our societies consider themselves emancipated from religious sacrifices. We do not erect altars, we do not offer victims to the gods, we do not practice sacrificial rituals. Yet, if we look carefully, we discover that sacrifice has not disappeared at all: only "the altars" have changed. Indeed, even today, there exist realities deemed so precious as to justify extremely high human costs: power, nation, economy, success, ideology, even personal self-realization. How often do innocent people become "collateral damage" of projects deemed superior? How many lives are consumed on the altar of efficiency, wealth, or ambition?

Human beings continue to sacrifice. Symbols change, languages change, but the question remains the same: what do we consider so important that we are willing to pay for it at any cost? It is within this universal question that we must listen to the story of Abraham and Isaac. Because the surprise of this story is not that God asks for a sacrifice. In the ancient world, this was not unusual. The real surprise is something else: "the knife stops."

The God of the Bible does not reveal himself as a deity to be appeased through human sacrifices. He reveals himself as the God who provides. And the Christian faith has always seen in this episode something beyond Abraham and Isaac: a shadow, a figure, a foreshadowing of a day when God himself would provide the definitive, complete, and unrepeatable sacrifice.

=== The biblical text ===
Let us now listen to this ancient tale with an open mind and an attentive heart, asking ourselves not only what it meant then, but what it can still say to us today.
Abraham's Faith Tested by the Command to Sacrifice Isaac. ''“After these things, God tested Abraham and said to him, ‘Abraham!’ And he answered, ‘Here I am.’ And God said, ‘Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.’” Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey. He took two of his servants with him and his son Isaac. He split wood for the burnt offering and arose to go to the place of which God had told him. On the third day, Abraham looked up and saw the place afar off. Abraham said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey, while the boy and I go over there and worship; Then we will return to you.' And Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire and the knife in his hand, and they both went together. Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, 'My father!' And Abraham answered, 'Here I am, my son.' And Isaac said, 'Here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?' And Abraham answered, 'My son, God will provide himself with the lamb for the burnt offering.' And they both went together. They came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar, and arranged the wood, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. But the angel of the LORD called from heaven and said, 'Abraham, Abraham!' And he answered, “Here I am.” And the angel said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” Then Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering in place of his son. And Abraham called that place Yahweh-Ireh. Therefore it is said to this day, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided”'' (Genesis 22:1-14).

=== I. Faith When Promises Seem to Die ===
The first thing that strikes us in this story is that God tests Abraham at the most precious moment of his life. Isaac was not simply his son: he was the son of the promise, the visible sign of God's faithfulness to the plan he would fulfill through him. By asking Abraham to offer him up, God seems to question his own promises. How can God keep his word if the son of the promise must die? This is the true test of faith: not believing when everything is clear, but continuing to trust in God when his ways seem incomprehensible.

In varying degrees, we all experience similar things. There are times when what we consider essential to our future seems to be taken away from us: relationships, health, plans, security. We too have our "Isaacs," those on which we base our hope and our identity. Abraham's faith teaches us that the believer is called to trust not so much in God's gifts, but in the God who gives. As the New Testament would later reveal, Abraham believed that God was even capable of raising the dead.

=== II. The Knife Stops: The God Who Provides ===
At the climax of the story, the unexpected happens: the knife stops. For the modern reader, perhaps the sacrifice itself seems scandalous; for the ancient reader, however, the real surprise was precisely that it was not performed. Human sacrifice was not unknown in the ancient world. The God of the Bible, however, differs from pagan deities: He does not demand the destruction of his son, but provides what is necessary Himself. In Isaac's place, a ram appears: a substitute victim. Here, for the first time in biblical history, the principle of substitution emerges clearly: someone takes someone else's place.

This is the heart of the message of Genesis 22. The place is called "Yahweh-Ireh," "The Lord provides." Biblical faith does not primarily proclaim what humans must offer to God, but what God provides for them. And perhaps even today, in a culture that has changed altars but has not eliminated the logic of sacrifice, we need to rediscover this truth: salvation does not come from what we offer to God, but from what God offers in his grace.

But there is another difficulty for modern sensibilities. Not only does sacrifice seem alien to us: the very idea of atonement seems alien to us. Many today tend to consider evil simply as error, frailty, or social conditioning. The Bible, however, also speaks of moral guilt: there is something distorted in the human heart that no technical, political, or educational progress has managed to eliminate. The wars, injustices, violence, and selfishness that continue to mark history remind us that the human problem is not only external, but also internal.

This is why Scripture teaches that evil cannot simply be ignored or declared nonexistent. Every sin creates a wound that requires reconciliation; every injustice opens a fracture that must be healed. We already understand this in human relationships: when evil is done, someone must bear the cost. True forgiveness is never free in the sense of being priceless; it always involves someone taking upon themselves the burden of reconciliation. In biblical language, sacrifice expresses precisely this truth: evil is serious, but God provides a path to reconciliation.

=== III. From Moriah to Golgotha ===
Since the earliest centuries, the Christian faith has seen this story as something more than an episode in the life of Abraham. Isaac, the beloved son, carrying the wood of sacrifice to Mount Moriah, has been understood as a figure of Christ carrying the cross to Golgotha. Here too, there is a father and a son. Here too, there is a mountain. Here too, there is the wood of sacrifice. Yet, at the decisive moment, a crucial difference emerges: Isaac is spared.

The apostle Paul seems to deliberately recall this episode when he writes: "He did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all" (Romans 8:32). On Mount Moriah the knife stops. On Golgotha it does not stop. Because what God does not ask Abraham to do, God accomplishes Himself in Christ. Thus, the God who provides does not remain distant from human suffering, but enters our history to offer the definitive sacrifice of reconciliation.

Here we touch the heart of the Christian Gospel. We sometimes hear people say, "Why doesn't God simply forgive?" But even in our human experience, we know that true forgiveness always comes at a cost. If someone seriously harms another and the relationship is restored, someone must bear the burden of the offense. In the Gospel, it is not humans who ascend to God, offering sacrifices to appease Him. It is God who, in His love, descends to humanity and takes upon Himself the cost of reconciliation. The cross is not the sign of a cruel God, but of a God who is both just and merciful: just, because He takes evil seriously; merciful, because He Himself bears its burden.

Traditional Christian faith has called this mystery "atonement." This does not mean that an angry God needs to be persuaded to love. Rather, it means that the God who loves the world does not treat evil as something insignificant. He confronts it, judges it, and at the same time bears its burden in Christ. Therefore, the cross is not merely an example of love or sacrifice: it is the place where God reconciles the world to himself. On Mount Moriah, Abraham learned that God provides. On Golgotha, the world sees what God had provided from the beginning: not the sacrifice of a human son to God, but the gift of God's Son for humankind.

=== Conclusion ===
Today we followed Abraham and Isaac on the road to Mount Moriah. We saw faith put to the test, a father willing to trust in God even when everything seemed to contradict his promises. We saw the knife rise and, at the decisive moment, stop. And we heard the name Abraham gave to that place: "Yahweh-Ireh," "The Lord Provides."

This ancient tale then poses us, first of all, a personal and inevitable question: what is our "Isaac"? What is that reality to which we entrust our security, our identity, and our future? Success, money, health, family, the approval of others, our plans? These are all precious gifts. But what would happen to our faith if they were taken away? None of them can replace God without becoming an altar on which, sooner or later, we end up sacrificing ourselves or others.

Genesis 22 also invites us to question the nature of the God we believe in. Is he perhaps a god who continually demands something from us? A god to be appeased, satisfied, or persuaded? The God of the Bible, however, reveals himself in a surprising way: not as a God who takes, but as a God who provides. Where humans seek to ascend to God with their own sacrifices, God descends to them with his grace.

The Christian faith recognizes in Mount Moriah a foreshadowing of another mountain: Golgotha. On Moriah the knife stops. On Golgotha it does not stop. Because what God did not ask Abraham to do, God himself accomplishes in Christ. Thus, the Son of God takes upon himself the burden of our guilt and opens the way to reconciliation with God, so that we receive not what we deserve, but what He, in his grace, has provided.

Perhaps the most profound message of this story is precisely this: at the end of faith, we find not an altar on which to offer something to God, but a God who has provided everything we need. The true and living God who provided for Abraham continues to call men and women to trust in Him today. These are the parameters, the criteria of the message of the Old and New Testaments, which we must confidently embrace.

So the question we are left with is simple and crucial: Are we willing, like Abraham, to trust the God who provides even when we don't understand all of His ways? ''“'For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,' says the LORD. 'For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts'”'' (Isaiah 55:8-9).
